For several years now, the NEUFNEUF Festival has maintained a partnership with INSA Toulouse, as part of a collaboration with the dance-studies programme run by Laurent Grégoire. The masterclass offers an immersion into the heart of a choreographer's creative process. Beyond a class or a workshop, what is at stake here is the practice itself, from the performer's / dancer's point of view. This year, we chose to work with Cécile Grassin, choreographer of Cie APPACH, based in the Occitanie region. Over the course of 3 days, she will lead a masterclass with students from INSA Toulouse in order to develop the outline of a choreographic project.

Cécile Grassin has been trained, untrained, built up, taken apart (and is still very much a work in progress) through a mix of formal academic training (CNR Nantes, ESDC Cannes) and looser, more casual workshops (CDC Toulouse, Ateliers de Paris, CND...). A performer for various choreographers over the past fifteen years or so, she has extended her own creative research through APPACH, the company she founded in 2017 to carry her projects.
In her first piece, Olo, a dance concert (created in 2018), she admits she would have liked to be a rock star, but since she's only a dancer, she dances instead. She dances the tracks she composed by writing down the spontaneous. Her thing? Spontaneity tested against the score, and vice versa. This is once again what's at stake in Cabinet de curiosité (created in 2019), a performance staged inside a glass box for 30 spectators wearing headsets. She then unfolds the idea of the sudden jolt, like a motif or a world to explore, in Grâce (created in 2021). In Tu te souviendras que j'étais ici nulle part (created in 2023), she attempts to capture and write down thought itself.
She is currently starting research for Royaume (working title), a piece for young audiences freely inspired by Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are, due for release in 2025. Cécile loves tools, games and protocols, using them both to create her pieces and to pass them on to all kinds of audiences. (State diploma, CND Lyon, 2016).
